It has been reported that one of the Bank Managers of a well known south India based nationalized bank posted at Kolkata has committed suicide. The most disturbing part was when we read that he committed suicide as he appears to have been abused, scolded, threatened by the Top Management in the Review Meet. This is really an ALARMING situations for the Banking community as a whole. We were surprised to read that almost 6/7 Bank Managers have committed suicide during last month. In case this is true, then situation is really alarming and it will become grim with large scale retirements in next three to four years.
We are not in a position to say the final word on the reasons for committing suicide, as as it is a matter of investigation. However, now a days it is a well known fact that Bank Officers / Managers are very frequently treated like a slave by the Top Management. Imaginary / impossible targets are fixed. To achieve the targets. Managers / Officers are spending almost 10 - 11 hours everyday and running behind the targets.
They are getting salary, but they are not getting time to spend with their families. Sometime, they are compelled to come to office even on Sundays. In spite of the same, number of DGMs / GMs are behaving in such a way that they are the proprietor / owner of the Bank and all other Managers / Officers are their paid servant. They forget that they are also paid employees and as they have joined earlier, they have become DGM / GM. It is also known fact to everyone, how they are getting their promotions and to what extent they can go for the promotions.
They are thinking that only they are efficient, fit, deserving employees to get salary and only they are working and only they need leave when they want.
This is true for all the Nationalised Banks. HRD concepts is totally NIL. One HRM Section is there. But, that section is doing only anti-HRM activities. They are least bothered to encourage / motivate people. On the contrary, by their activities, all the employees get de-motivated, frustrated.
Now, TRADE UNIONS have become very week. Leaders are not getting time for raising these issues at the right platform. They are busy for their own cause.
